Join us for the eighth webinar in our Discovering the Materials of Tomorrow series. This time we're exploring materials research at Freie Universität Berlin with Prof. Dr. Siegfried Eigler, who guides us through their research centre’s project investigating ‘Heterostructures of Molecules and Two-Dimensional Materials’.
Molecule-2D material heterostructure systems merge the crystalline order of 2D materials with the tunability and reactivity of molecules. Researchers are exploring how interactions in these heterostructures can create new states like collective light-matter states and charge-transfer excitons. Their work spans atomic to microscopic scales and employs both experimental and theoretical methods. Key areas include enhancing molecular control, understanding charge transfer, and ensuring structural quality. The goal is to unlock innovative devices, tunable optoelectronics, and new chemical pathways, bridging physics and chemistry to advance molecular nanoscale science.
Prof. Dr. Siegfried Eigler is a Professor of Organic Chemistry at Freie Universität Berlin, specialising in atomic- and molecular-level design of 2D materials, emitting carbon-rich molecules and carbon nanostructures. His pioneering work on graphene and graphene oxide — spanning defect engineering, proton transport, and selective functionalisation — has shaped modern materials chemistry and nanotechnology. He also develops stable organic semiconductors and photonic nanohybrids, bridging synthesis, characterisation, and functional performance.
