One Health Webinar 2026 | Bridging ecosystems and algorithms to promote One Health

This event will explore the new approaches bridging the gap between ecosystems and algorithms, highlighting innovative strategies and collaborative efforts to improve health outcomes for humans, animals, and the environment.

This webinar marks the fifth installment in an annual series co-hosted by the Una Europa academic Self-Steering Committee in One Health and MSD Animal Health. Aimed at a diverse academic and professional audience, the series offers insights from leading experts on contemporary research and best practices in the One Health domain.

This webinar will be broadcast in English, with subtitles available in multiple languages (e.g. Spanish, Italian, German, Portuguese, and French). The platform will be available from 13:45CET on the day.

• Bruno Gonzalez-Zorn | Head of the Antimicrobial Resistance Unit at Universidad Complutense de Madrid and Adjunct Professor of Biotechnology at the University for Development Studies, Ghana

Prof. Bruno Gonzalez-Zorn gained his DVM in 1996 studying in Spain and Germany and his European PhD in 2001. Currently he leads the Antimicrobial Resistance Unit at Universidad Complutense de Madrid, working on molecular microbiology and the ecology of antimicrobial resistance. His research interests focus on the role the ecology of antimicrobial resistance, focusing his research on genomics from a One Health perspective. He is the former president of the Group for Molecular Microbiology of the Spanish Society for Microbiology, and is part of numerous Committees on Antimicrobial Resistance at National and International Institutions.

• Thilo Kroll | Joint University College Dublin - Ireland East Hospital Group Full Professor of Health Systems at University College Dublin

Thilo Kroll holds a PhD in Psychology, focusing on the social inclusion of children and adolescents with cancer in Germany, and has over 30 years of experience in interdisciplinary research on disability, rehabilitation, and health. Before joining University College Dublin in 2016, he was a Professor of Disability and Public Health at the University of Dundee and Co-Director of the Social Dimensions of Health Institute. Thilo is passionate about community and participatory research, particularly concerning marginalised groups, and is currently leading the implementation of public and patient involvement in health care as part of the Irish HRB-funded National PPI Network.

• Marcel Haas | Associate Professor of Data Science in Population Health at Universiteit Leiden's Medical Centre

Marcel Haas started his career in astrophysics. After a decade of doing data science in industry, he joined the Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC) and the team that runs a transdisciplinary data infrastructure with a focus on population health. He lead the technical team of data managers, engineers and scientists in their work to support a few dozen researchers. His own research focuses on using routinely collected healthcare data, combined with census data and using it for the prediction of disease onset and progression in lifestyle related disease and mental health. He also works on synthetic data sets to support education and open science. His work spans the full spectrum of translational data science, from fundamental work in computer science to studies that support implementation of our findings in clinical practice.

• Lara Urban | Professor in One Health at Universität Zürich

Lara Urban is a statistical geneticist with a PhD in computational genomics from the University of Cambridge and the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) and independent research experience with the national Department of Conservation as a Humboldt Fellow in New Zealand. Since 2022, Lara has led her own research group, now as a professor at Universität Zürich and its Food Safety and One Health Institutes, and previously as Helmholtz Principal Investigator at the Helmholtz AI Institute with a faculty position at the Technical University of Munich. Lara was named the Young Scientist of the Year by the German Association of University Professors in 2023 and one of the Swiss Top 100 Women in AI, Data, and Robotics in 2026. She is engaged with the German governmental One Health Council, the Swiss Biorisk Alliance, the Swiss Pathogen Surveillance Platform nanopore expert group, and the PulseNet International network.

• Katja Hornbæk Mikkelsen | Veterinary Technical Manager at MSD Animal Health Nordic

Katja Hornbæk Mikkelsen graduated as veterinarian in 2006 and worked in cattle practice in Denmark until 2013. Since then, she has been employed as a Veterinary Technical Manager at MSD Animal Health Nordic. Katja was brought up on a dairy farm and has a long-standing interest in calf health and management, leading welfare projects like Cattle Care 24/7, a project that combines health monitoring, prevention and communication around calf health on dairy farms.

• Ad de Groof | Principal Scientist at MSD Animal Health the Netherlands

Ad de Groof is a principal scientist at MSD Animal Health in Boxmeer, the Netherlands. His department, Discovery & Technology (D&T), is part of the Global Research & Development (R&D) group of the Animal Health division. Their research focuses on: (1) novel technologies for the isolation, characterization, and culturing of newly discovered pathogens that infect animals and possibly humans (zoonoses), (2) novel approaches to efficacious vaccine development against existing and newly discovered pathogens, and (3) the development of new technologies to culture pathogens for vaccine production. At D&T, he works with a team of five project leaders from different disciplines: Cell Biology, Bacteriology, Molecular Virology, Immunology, and Chemistry.
